When Helping Starts to Become Taking Over
Most people who enter helping professions want to help.
That sounds obvious.
But one of the things I appreciate about Motivational Interviewing is that it asks us to pay attention to what can happen because we want to help.
We hear a problem.
We recognize a possible solution.
And almost immediately we want to provide it.
Before We Give Advice, Can We Ask One More Question?
Most of us entered helping professions because we care.
Someone tells us about a problem, and very quickly we can see possibilities.
Sometimes we can even see the solution.
Naturally, we want to help.
MI asks us to notice what happens next.
What Is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative communication approach designed to strengthen a person's own motivation and commitment to change.
